About Us

Fall 2024 Plant sale showing tables with many vegetables and volunteers.

Our Roots

A diverse group of local gardeners from across the Sunshine State "planted" the idea for Gardening for Change after recognizing the need to help others navigate the unique challenges of growing in North Central Florida. Many believe gardening here is impossible due to blazing summer heat, humid conditions, unpredictable winter frosts, and sandy soil—but that's simply not true!

Gardening, like everything else, has gotten more thorny on the budget. With rising costs for seeds, plants, and gadgets promising green thumbs, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where we come in!

At Gardening for Change, we’re committed to helping you grow without breaking the bank. Our affordable plant sales, hands-on seed starting classes, and informative workshops on gardening techniques will help you dig in with confidence.

Join us as we sow the seeds of a more sustainable and budget-friendly gardening community!

Gardening in North Central Florida

Florida’s climate stretches from the tropical warmth of its southern tip to the temperate chill of its northern panhandle, covering growing Zones 11 to 8. Here in our "sweet spot" of Zone 9-8b, we’re lucky to have a garden that keeps giving all year long—but timing is the key to a bountiful harvest.

For example, while southern Florida gardeners plant tomatoes in winter, and northern states grow theirs alongside summer broccoli, it’s a different story here. In our region, tomatoes need to be started as early as February with a little "blanket of protection" and are done producing by June, thanks to our sizzling heat and humidity. Broccoli, on the other hand, thrives in the cooler months, sprouting into action when planted in early October and growing through the winter.

Learning the rhythm of our garden calendar is the secret to "growing success" in this unique climate!

Rejuvenate Through Gardening

Gardening for Change was planted to help people understand and tackle the unique challenges of growing in our one-of-a-kind climate. We "nurture growth" through education, hands-on experience, and a strong sense of community.

Gardening invites us to step outside and dig into nature, giving us a chance to pause and reconnect. It’s a moment to listen to the cheerful songs of birds, watch bees busily buzzing from bloom to bloom, and feel the warm sun on our skin. The sight of flowers bursting into color reminds us to let go of our hectic schedules and embrace a calming, healing process.

It’s more than growing plants—it’s about cultivating peace and finding joy in the simple beauty of the natural world. 🌱
